Every Brilliant Thing Auditions

Los Altos Stage Company is holding open auditions for Every Brilliant Thing written by Duncan Macmillan and Jonny Donahoe.

Directed by Gary Landis

“[A] heart-wrenching, hilarious play…One of the funniest plays you’ll ever see about depression—and possibly one of the funniest plays you’ll ever see, full stop…There is something tough being confronted here—the guilt of not being able to make those we love happy—and it is explored with unflinching honesty.” —The Guardian (UK)

You’re six years old. Mum’s in hospital. Dad says she’s “done something stupid.” She finds it hard to be happy. So you start to make a list of everything that’s brilliant about the world. Everything that’s worth living for. 1. Ice cream. 2. Kung Fu movies. 3. Burning things. 4. Laughing so hard you shoot milk out your nose. 5. Construction cranes. 6. Me. You leave it on her pillow. You know she’s read it because she’s corrected your spelling. Soon, the list will take on a life of its own. A play about depression and the lengths we will go to for those we love.

Performance dates: Wednesday through Sunday, December 2 – December 19, 2021. Wednesday-Saturday performances start at 8pm. Sundays start at 3pm.

Audition date: Saturday, August 21, 2021 from 10am-1pm. By appointment only.

Where: Los Altos Stage Company Theatre (97 Hillview Ave, Los Altos)

Callbacks: On an invited individual rolling basis.

Rehearsals: Weekly, Sunday through Thursday, from 6pm-9pm (Sundays) and 7pm-10pm (Monday-Thursday). Rehearsals begin Monday, November 1, 2021. Time will be taken off for Thanksgiving.

Actor Acknowledgement: This role is volunteer and non-AEA. A $15 meal reimbursement will be provided for each rehearsal and performance day to which the actor is called and attends as an acknowledgement for your time and talent. For this show, the anticipated number of rehearsals and performances is 40.

Audition requirements: Please prepare one 2-minute contemporary monologue.

To request an audition time slot, please email casting@losaltosstage.org. Please include a digital copy of your headshot and resume.

Role: Narrator*

*According to the authors the “Narrator” can be played by any age, gender, or ethnicity. The term narrator is used for ease of reading the script, but is never heard by the audience or referenced in the program or production materials.

We highly encourage people of all ethnicities, races, ages and gender identities to audition.

While this is a solo show, the actor playing the narrator uses the audience members to play the other characters they encounter. This is a unique show with a good deal of improvisation and audience interaction.

Mail: PO Box 151, Los Altos, CA 94023

Theater: 97 Hillview Ave., Los Altos
